An elopement needs fewer things, chosen more carefully. A stylist's guide to what to include, what to leave out and how to keep it intimate.

Styling an Elopement in Lapland: What Two People Actually Need

An elopement is the most distilled form of a wedding. With no guest list, no reception and no schedule to manage, everything that remains has to matter. That is what makes styling an elopement so rewarding, and also why it benefits from careful editing. In Lapland, where the landscape already does so much, the question is not what to add, but what to choose.

Start with the setting, not the decoration

The setting is the elopement. A frozen lake, a birch forest, a hilltop at blue hour, a lavvu with a fire inside. Each has its own character, and the styling should respond to it. We usually spend the first conversation talking about where the two of you feel most yourselves, and then let the design follow. If you are still considering where to go, our guide to eloping in Rovaniemi and our page on elopements in Lapland are good starting points.

Choose one focal point

With only two people in the frame, one considered element is more powerful than many small ones. This might be a simple arch of birch and spruce, a pair of reindeer hides with a low table and candles, a small floral frame, or a single path of lanterns leading to the place where you will say your vows. Everything else is optional. The focal point gives photographs a centre and gives the moment a place to happen.

Think about what you will hold

At an elopement, the things you touch matter more than the things you see. A bouquet that suits the cold, a pair of rings in a small box you have chosen, a handwritten vow card, a warm shawl or a pair of sheepskin-lined boots all become part of the day. We help couples choose these with care, because they will appear in nearly every photograph. Our guide to what to pack covers the practical side.

Plan for warmth, quietly

Warmth is the single most important practical consideration. A good elopement is paced so that you are never cold for long. This might mean a heated shelter nearby, a flask of something warm, a pair of hand warmers tucked into pockets, and a timeline with short pauses. When warmth is handled well, nobody notices it. When it is not, it is all anyone remembers.

Light the moment gently

Even at an elopement, light matters. A few candles in glass, a lantern or two and the natural light of the hour create atmosphere without distracting from the landscape. In winter, we are careful to choose lighting that stays alight in wind and cold, and we always check local rules on open flame. For an evening setting, softly lit paths and a small, warm focal point can feel extraordinary against the dark.

Leave room for the unplanned

One of the pleasures of an elopement is how much space there is for the unexpected. A fox crossing the snow, a sudden break in the cloud, a moment of quiet that neither of you planned. A good design leaves room for this. We aim for a simple structure with enough flexibility that you can follow the day as it unfolds.

Consider what you want to remember

When there are no guests, the photographs and the memory are what you take home. Many couples find it helpful to think about this in advance. Which moments do you want captured? Which places? Are there details, such as hands, rings, footprints or light on the snow, that you would like to see? Sharing this with your photographer and stylist helps us design around what matters most. The conversation about portrait locations can be a useful place to begin.

Keep the scale honest

An elopement does not need to feel small, but it should feel honest. A thoughtful setting, a few well-chosen elements and a calm schedule are enough to make the day feel complete. Some couples add a quiet dinner afterwards, a sauna, or a small gathering with one or two witnesses. These can be styled with the same care, in a way that continues the mood of the ceremony.

Fewer things, chosen well

The best elopements we have styled have one thing in common: nothing felt like it was there for show. Each element had a reason, and the landscape was allowed to speak. That is the heart of it.
