Ordering Wedding Flowers for Lapland: Lead Times, Sourcing and Seasons

Flowers in the Arctic are a logistical question

Florals are among the most emotional parts of a wedding, and in Lapland also among the most complex. There are no large flower farms nearby. Most blooms travel from the Netherlands or Southern Finland, often by road and air, and every step adds time and temperature risk.

Understanding this early prevents disappointment later. Good planning means that you can have beautiful flowers; it simply means ordering sooner than you would at home.

How far in advance to order

For a wedding, we recommend confirming the floral design three to four months ahead, and the final order six to eight weeks before the date. Specialty stems, such as particular garden roses or peonies, may need earlier commitment. For December and the New Year period, when demand and transport pressure are high, begin even sooner.

The final count and variety is locked at about two weeks out, after which the supplier cuts and ships to arrive two to three days before the wedding. This allows time for conditioning and arrangement.

Seasons shape the palette

In winter, hardy flowers such as roses, ranunculus, anemones and amaryllis hold well, and evergreen foliage is abundant. In summer, local meadow flowers, wild grasses and cut garden stems are available and give a beautiful, natural result. Spring and autumn offer the widest choice but also the least predictable weather.

We design with a hero flower and a flexible supporting cast, so that if one variety is short, another can take its place without changing the look. Our article on winter wedding flowers explains what survives the cold.

Protecting flowers in the cold

Flowers cannot be left outdoors in winter. They are stored in a cool but frost-free space, transported in insulated boxes and placed at the last possible moment. Outdoor arrangements, such as an arch or aisle, use hardy foliage and dried elements, with fresh blooms added just before the ceremony.

We also advise couples to carry bouquets in a warm car or building until the moment they are needed. A few minutes in minus twenty can mark delicate petals.

What flowers cost in the North

Because of transport, flowers in Lapland generally cost more than at home, especially in winter. The cost is not only the stems but also packaging, cold-chain delivery and the extra time to condition them. We share a realistic estimate early so you can choose where to place your budget.

A useful way to think about it is value per impact. A single, generous floral installation at the ceremony will often have more effect than small arrangements everywhere. Foliage, branches and dried materials give volume at a lower cost.

Dried and preserved alternatives

Dried flowers and preserved foliage are a beautiful and practical choice in the Arctic. They tolerate the cold, can be prepared in advance and travel easily. A mix of dried grasses, pampas, wheat, preserved eucalyptus and a handful of fresh blooms gives a soft, Nordic look that photographs well.

Many couples also like that dried arrangements can be kept afterwards. Our article on floral preservation explains how to keep a bouquet after the wedding.

Working with your own florist

Some couples bring a trusted florist from home, others prefer us to source locally. Both work well when the roles are clear. We have written about how this collaboration works and how to share the design brief.

Where the budget is limited, we often suggest investing in one strong floral moment, such as the ceremony backdrop or the table centrepieces, and filling the rest with foliage, candles and natural textures. Our styling services can include sourcing and installation.
