What Arctic Conditions Actually Mean for an Arch
Rovaniemi sits just above the Arctic Circle, and its winters are not merely cold — they are structurally demanding. Temperatures from December through March regularly fall to −15 °C and can dip below −30 °C during the coldest kaamos weeks in January. Wind gusts along open riverbanks and forest clearings routinely reach 10–14 m/s, occasionally higher during Lapland storm fronts. Humidity hovers near 85–90% throughout the season, meaning any untreated timber will swell, and any poorly tensioned fabric will ice up and sag.
The challenge is not simply holding an arch upright — it is holding it still. A structure that rocks even slightly in sub-zero wind will shed its florals, torque its joints, and look unstable in photographs. Before we ever pick foliage or ribbon, we engineer the frame as though it will face a full Lapland storm on the day of the ceremony.
The Three Arch Designs We Use Most
Over several winters of ceremonies in Rovaniemi, we have refined our hire inventory down to three core arch formats. Each is chosen for a different setting and wind exposure level.
The Asymmetric Birch Frame
Built from dried, debarked birch poles of varying heights, this arch has a deliberately irregular silhouette that reads as wild and Nordic rather than formally dressed. Because the poles are lashed and cross-braced rather than socketed, the frame has a degree of natural flex — it absorbs wind rather than fighting it. We use this design most often in forest settings, where tree canopy reduces gust velocity and the aesthetic suits the surroundings. Internal weight is provided by steel ground stakes driven 40 cm into compacted snow, supplemented by two 15 kg ballast bags concealed at the base of the tallest uprights.
The Powder-Coated Steel Arc
For open-ground locations — frozen lakeshores, hotel terraces, the banks of the Kemijoki — we deploy a powder-coated steel arc with welded cross-struts. The frame weighs approximately 28 kg without decoration, and the four ground plates accept both ice auger anchors (for compacted ice surfaces) and 20 kg concrete ballast discs (for snow pack). This is our most wind-resistant arch. Its circular geometry distributes load evenly, and the smooth steel tube surface offers no purchase for wind compared to a latticed wood alternative. The Copper Pipe Crescent
A narrower, crescent-shaped frame in 28 mm copper pipe, this design suits intimate elopements and indoor-outdoor threshold ceremonies at kota venues. Its smaller footprint — approximately 160 cm wide at the base and 220 cm at the apex — makes it easier to position within a heated entrance and still read as an arch in ceremony portraits. Copper conducts cold rapidly, so we wrap the base sections with leather to protect guests and florists working close to the frame. Anchoring is via two adjustable floor flanges bolted to a portable hardwood base board.
Ground Anchoring in Frozen Conditions
The ground beneath a Rovaniemi ceremony is never neutral. In midwinter it may be 30–50 cm of compacted snow over frozen earth; in early November or late March it may be partially thawed, with unpredictable load-bearing capacity. We assess the surface during our pre-ceremony site visit, typically 90 minutes before guests arrive, and select anchoring method accordingly.
- Ice auger anchors — 30 cm helical steel augers that screw into dense snow or ice pack. Each accepts a 6 mm tensioning cord tied back to the arch uprights at 45°. We use two per upright on any arch taller than 200 cm.
- Concrete ballast discs — 20 kg cast-concrete discs that sit over the arch’s ground plates. Invisible under a skirt of dried heather or evergreen boughs. Effective on soft snow where stakes have poor pull-out resistance.
- Hardwood base boards — used on indoor or semi-covered surfaces (kota floors, hotel terraces). A 200 × 40 cm board distributes the upright load across a wide footprint. The copper crescent arch ships with its own board.
- Tree tie-back lines — in forested settings, 3 mm stainless wire is run from the arch crown to nearby spruce or pine trunks via carabiner. Invisible in photographs from the front, but provides the single most effective gust resistance when trees are available within 3 metres.
We never rely on a single anchoring method. Every ceremony arch leaves our workshop with at least two independent systems, so that if one fails — a stake works loose in a temperature spike, a ballast disc shifts — the arch remains standing. For destination couples booking their ceremony, we include a full ground-assessment clause in our planning consultation: if the site is unsuitable for any of our arch formats on the day, we carry a contingency frame that can be rigged within 20 minutes.

Florals and Botanicals That Survive the Cold
Fresh florals behave unpredictably below −5 °C. Roses, the most cold-tolerant cut flower, will remain presentable for the length of a ceremony (30–45 minutes) if transported in insulated packaging and staged no more than 10 minutes before guests are seated. Below −10 °C, petals become brittle and bruise on contact. For this reason, the majority of our arch florals in deep winter are dried, preserved, or foraged.
Dried pampas grass, preserved eucalyptus, cotton stems, and foraged reindeer lichen hold their form at any temperature and require no hydration. They are also significantly lighter than fresh arrangements — an important consideration when calculating total arch weight against anchor capacity. Spruce and pine boughs cut from the venue grounds stay supple for 6–8 hours in sub-zero temperatures and carry a scent that photographs cannot capture but guests always notice. We integrate fresh roses or ranunculus sparingly, concentrated in the lower third of the arch where body heat from the couple creates a small warm microclimate. Fabric Choices and Why We Avoid Sails
Any fabric on an arch increases its effective wind profile. A full chiffon drape on a 2-metre arch can add the equivalent of a 0.8 m² sail — enough to overturn an inadequately anchored frame in a 10 m/s gust. Our approach is to use fabric in small panels rather than full drapes, and always to choose materials that allow wind to pass through rather than catch it.
Loose-weave linen and open-knit macramé are our preferred draping materials for winter ceremonies. Both allow air movement, and both photograph beautifully against snow backgrounds. For couples who want a fully draped aesthetic, we stage the fabric inside a heated kota or barn portion of the venue and use the arch as a visual threshold between indoor and outdoor, so it carries minimal fabric in the exposed section. The Contingency Swap: When Plans Change on the Day
Lapland weather does not negotiate. A ceremony planned for a frozen lakeshore in calm conditions can face a 15 m/s cross-wind by midday. For this reason, every arch booking with Rovaniemi Weddings includes a contingency assessment call on the morning of the ceremony and a clearly agreed swap protocol.
If the confirmed arch design is unsuitable for the conditions, we shift to the next format down in our wind-exposure hierarchy: open steel arc to birch frame (in tree cover), birch frame to copper crescent (moved indoors or to a sheltered threshold). The florals and botanicals are transferable between frames in most cases, and the swap adds no more than 25 minutes to setup time. Couples confirm their swap preference during the final planning call, so there is no decision to be made under pressure on the day.
We document every ceremony arch setup with a brief structural note — anchor type, ballast weight, wind speed at setup time — which we file with the event record. Booking an Arch for Your Rovaniemi Ceremony
Arch hire is included within our styling packages and can also be arranged as a standalone item for couples working with a separate ceremony planner. We ask for a confirmed venue and approximate guest count at least 8 weeks before the ceremony date so we can assess ground conditions, anchor requirements, and florist lead time. For peak winter dates — late December through early February — our arch inventory books 4–6 months in advance.
