Best Flights to Nordic Lapland

Getting your guests to the Arctic Circle requires a little advance planning — here is everything couples need to know about reaching Rovaniemi and Finnish Lapland from across Europe.

Two Lapland Airports Worth Knowing

Most European travellers arrive in Finnish Lapland through one of two airports: Rovaniemi (RVN), situated just south of the Arctic Circle, and Kittilä (KTT), roughly 130 kilometres to the north-west. Both are served by international carriers throughout the winter season and by connecting services via Helsinki year-round. The choice between them depends largely on where your ceremony and accommodation are located — our team is always happy to advise when you get in touch.

A third option worth mentioning is arriving via Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) and taking a domestic connection north. Finnair operates up to seven flights a day on the Helsinki–Rovaniemi route, each lasting approximately one hour and twenty minutes. This route offers the greatest scheduling flexibility and suits guests whose intercontinental connections land at Helsinki rather than at a smaller Lapland gateway.

Flying from London

London is among the best-connected cities for direct winter flights to Finnish Lapland. EasyJet operates direct services from both Gatwick and Luton to Rovaniemi between late November and late February, typically on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Norwegian also runs a Sunday service from Gatwick through to mid-March. These seasonal schedules carry a narrower booking window than year-round routes, so couples should advise their UK guests to book as early as possible — ideally eight to twelve months ahead of the wedding date.

For guests travelling outside the direct-flight season, British Airways and Finnair both offer smooth same-day connections via Helsinki. The typical journey time from London Heathrow to Rovaniemi via Helsinki is around four to five hours gate-to-gate, making it a very manageable trip for even time-pressed family members.

We told our guests to book direct EasyJet flights from Gatwick the moment we announced our November wedding — they sold out within weeks. Worth flagging early in your save-the-dates.

From France and Germany

Parisian guests have an excellent range of winter options. Air France flies direct from Charles de Gaulle to Rovaniemi from early December through to late March on Wednesdays and Saturdays. EasyJet mirrors a similar schedule from CDG, while Ryanair serves the route from Paris Beauvais on Mondays and Thursdays. Guests arriving at Kittilä from Paris can choose Transavia, which also operates direct winter services.

From Germany, EasyJet flies Berlin Brandenburg to Rovaniemi on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the winter season. Frankfurt guests have Discover Airlines direct to Kittilä, Munich guests can board Lufthansa, and Düsseldorf is served by Eurowings. For couples planning a Lapland-styled winter celebration, these German routes are well-timed for the peak aurora and snow season between December and early March.

  • Berlin (BER) → Rovaniemi (RVN) — EasyJet, December to March, Tue/Thu/Sat
  • Frankfurt (FRA) → Kittilä (KTT) — Discover Airlines, winter season only
  • Munich (MUC) → Kittilä (KTT) — Lufthansa, winter charter schedule
  • Düsseldorf (DUS) → Kittilä (KTT) — Eurowings, winter season

From Italy and Spain

Italian guests travelling from Rome Fiumicino can board Neos, which operates direct seasonal flights to Rovaniemi during the peak Christmas and New Year period, typically December through to February. Guests from Milan have a direct option to Kittilä, making Finnish Lapland more accessible than many couples expect. As with all charter-adjacent routes, early booking — at least nine to twelve months ahead — is essential.

From Madrid, Iberia introduced a direct winter service to Rovaniemi running from early December through to early February. Spanish guests travelling outside those dates will connect via Helsinki, which remains a swift and comfortable option. Finnish immigration at Helsinki is part of the Schengen area, so EU passport holders clear passport control once and proceed without further checks to the domestic gate.

Amsterdam and the Benelux Region

KLM introduced a weekly service from Amsterdam Schiphol to Kittilä in winter 2025–2026, operating on Boeing 737-800s. The outbound flight departs Schiphol at 12:20 and arrives in Kittilä at 16:20 — a remarkably civilised schedule for a journey into the sub-Arctic. TUI Fly also covers Amsterdam and Rotterdam routes to Kittilä, making the Benelux region one of the best-served areas of north-west Europe for direct Lapland access.

Guests from Zürich and Riga also have direct winter connections into Kittilä. As of early 2026, some 13 airlines serve Kittilä Airport from 21 destinations across Europe. Couples with international guest lists will find Finnish Lapland far better connected than its remote reputation suggests.

Booking Lead Times and Practical Advice

Direct flights to Rovaniemi and Kittilä operate on a seasonal schedule running broadly from late October through to late March. Seats fill quickly — especially for December and January dates, which overlap with peak holiday demand from families across Europe. We advise couples to send save-the-dates at least twelve months in advance and to include a clear note directing guests to book flights promptly. A simple “how to get here” section on your wedding website, with suggested routes listed by departure city, removes friction for guests who are less familiar with Finnish Lapland geography.

For summer or autumn weddings — ruska season in September brings extraordinary amber and crimson foliage across the birch forests — guests will route via Helsinki year-round. Finnair and SAS both offer convenient morning departures from major European hubs that connect through Helsinki and land in Rovaniemi before midday. If you are planning a candlelit autumn celebration, this timing works beautifully with the shortening daylight hours that lend themselves to warm, intimate lighting.

Our guests came from nine different countries. We put together a simple one-page travel guide and told them to book early. Having direct flights from Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam made everything so much simpler than we had expected.

Airport Transfers on Arrival

Rovaniemi Airport sits just eight kilometres from the town centre. The Airport Express shuttle runs to coincide with incoming flights, connecting the terminal with Rovaniemi city centre and Santa Claus Village for approximately €8 per person. Taxis are readily available outside the terminal, with fares running to roughly €28 for a group of up to four passengers and around €37 for five to eight. Private transfers can be pre-booked for guests arriving in groups, ensuring a named driver is waiting in arrivals.

For weddings using venues outside the town centre, we typically co-ordinate a group transfer arrangement with local operators, collecting guests from the airport and their accommodation at a fixed time. To discuss transfer logistics for your guest group, our planning team can provide recommendations tailored to your itinerary.

  • Airport Express bus — approx. €8 per person, timed to all arriving flights
  • Airport taxi — approx. €28 for 1–4 passengers, 10–20 min to city centre
  • Pre-booked private transfer — fixed price, named driver, suited to larger groups
  • Group coach — available for wedding parties of ten or more, bookable via local operators

Matching Your Season to Your Flights

The most varied choice of European direct flights to Lapland falls within the winter season, broadly November to March. December and January weddings benefit from deep snow, the magic of kaamos — polar twilight — and the best statistical odds of witnessing the revontulet, the northern lights. March brings longer days and temperatures that, while still cold (typically −5°C to −15°C), are gentler than midwinter. September and October offer the ruska autumn colours and aurora-visible nights, though guests will connect via Helsinki rather than fly direct from most European cities.

Whatever season you choose, we recommend building your venue and styling decisions around your guest travel plan rather than the other way around. A December wedding with guests flying from five European cities requires careful co-ordination of flight schedules, particularly where families with young children or elderly guests are involved. Our planning service covers this logistics layer as part of the full Rovaniemi Weddings experience.

Frequently asked

Still wondering?

01Which airport should my wedding guests fly into — Rovaniemi (RVN) or Kittilä (KTT)?+
It depends on the location of your venue and accommodation. Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) is closest to the town centre and venues along the Kemijoki river valley. Kittilä Airport (KTT) serves venues further north, including Levi and the fell areas. We can advise based on your specific venue choice.
02Are there direct flights to Rovaniemi from outside Scandinavia?+
Yes, during the winter season (typically November to March) direct services operate from London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam, and other European cities. Outside this window, guests connect via Helsinki-Vantaa, which is quick and well-served by Finnair, SAS, and other carriers.
03How far in advance should guests book their flights?+
We recommend booking as early as possible — ideally nine to twelve months ahead for winter wedding dates. Direct winter routes to Lapland have limited seat capacity and sell out quickly, especially in December and January when they overlap with peak family holiday demand.
04Do EU citizens need a visa to enter Finland for a wedding?+
EU and EEA citizens do not need a visa to enter Finland. Guests from outside the EU may require a Schengen visa, which permits short stays of up to 90 days. Finland is a full Schengen member, so passport control is typically completed at the first point of entry into the Schengen area — often Helsinki-Vantaa.
05How do guests get from Rovaniemi Airport to the town or to wedding venues?+
Rovaniemi Airport is approximately eight kilometres from the town centre. Options include the Airport Express shuttle (approx. €8 per person), a taxi (approx. €28 for up to four passengers), or a pre-booked private transfer. For larger wedding parties, group coaches can be arranged to collect guests directly from arrivals.
06What is the best time of year for a Lapland wedding if guests are travelling from southern Europe?+
Winter (December to March) offers the widest choice of direct flights from southern European cities including Rome, Madrid, and Paris. January and February combine reliable snow cover, polar twilight atmosphere, and the highest aurora probability — on a clear night the revontulet are visible roughly three to four evenings out of seven during peak season.
