A quiet guide to marrying beneath the Northern Lights — from timing and venues to florals, fur, and the small Finnish details that make it unforgettable.
Why couples choose Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle — a small city surrounded by snow-blanketed forest, frozen rivers, and the kind of silence you can only find this far north. For couples dreaming of a winter wedding in Lapland, it offers something rare: deep snow from November through April, a genuine chance to see the Northern Lights, and venues built for the cold.
We’ve designed weddings here for couples from across Europe, the US, and Asia. What they all find surprising is how quiet a Rovaniemi winter day feels — and how that quiet changes the tone of a ceremony.
“The silence before the ceremony is what we remember most. Just snow falling, and the sound of our guests’ breath.

The best time of year to marry here
The short answer: December through March. But each month has a different character, and the right one depends on the mood you’re chasing.
December — the fairytale month
Early darkness (sun sets around 1pm), heavy snowfall, and the real chance of a white Christmas ceremony. Venues book up 12+ months ahead.
January & February — peak aurora season
The coldest months, but also the clearest skies. If Northern Lights are non-negotiable, aim for late January to mid-February.
March — longer days, softer light
Snow still thick on the ground, but with 8–10 hours of golden daylight. Our photographers’ favourite month.
Choosing a venue
Rovaniemi venues break into four broad categories — each suits a different wedding size and tone:
- Ice & snow chapels — intimate (10–30 guests), otherworldly, and only open December to April.
- Arctic glass igloos & wilderness lodges — for 20–60 guests, with aurora views and sauna evenings.
- Historic venues in the city — Arktikum, Santa Claus Village chapel, the Korundi — easy for larger gatherings (60–120).
- Private log cabins & manor houses — for multi-day weddings where guests stay on-site.
Decor that works in sub-zero temperatures
Not every floral or fabric survives a Rovaniemi winter. We’ve learnt — sometimes the hard way — which pieces handle −25°C and which don’t.
For outdoor ceremonies, we lean on pillar candles in hurricane vessels, structural arches with preserved eucalyptus, and faux fur throws on ceremony benches. Fresh florals in full bloom are used sparingly — hardier stems like eucalyptus, pine, and dried pampas travel better in the cold.
Photography & the Northern Lights
Photographing a Rovaniemi wedding is a specialism of its own. The light is low and blue for most of the day, so photographers plan around a 30-minute golden-hour window around midday in December and January.
If Northern Lights photos are part of the dream, build a second dedicated session into the itinerary — usually around 10pm on a clear night. Most local photographers include an ‘aurora alert’ add-on where they’ll come back out if the forecast peaks during your stay.
Budget realistically
Rovaniemi is more affordable than you’d expect for destination weddings, but the transport and accommodation for guests is where budgets usually expand.
As a rough guide, our couples spend between €8,000 and €35,000 on decor, florals, photography, and planning combined — excluding venue hire and guest accommodation. Most land around €15,000–€22,000 for a 40-guest winter wedding with full styling.
Your next steps
If you’re seriously considering a Rovaniemi wedding, the two things worth doing first are:
- Lock your date range — decide your flexibility (a specific weekend, or ‘first aurora-friendly weekend in February’).
- Enquire with a local planner early — venues and photographers book 10–14 months ahead for peak season.
