Seven Rovaniemi hotels and lodges — chosen for character, proximity, and the kind of quiet magic that makes a wedding week feel entirely its own.
Why your accommodation choice matters
A Rovaniemi wedding rarely lasts a single day. Couples arrive days before the ceremony to acclimatise to kaamos — the polar night — or to catch the first pale brush of ruska, the autumn colour change across the birch forest. Guests fly in from Helsinki, London, and further afield, and they carry their own impressions of Lapland home with them. The hotel you recommend, and the one you choose yourselves, becomes part of the story they tell. We spend a great deal of time with our couples discussing exactly this: how to cluster accommodation so that the morning-after breakfast feels unhurried, how to give close family a private sauna to retreat to, and how to ensure the most adventurous guests end up somewhere with a frozen lake on the doorstep.
Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle, and the city centre is small enough that most of the hotels below are within 30 km of each other — yet they feel worlds apart in character. Downtown options offer walkability and warmth; forest and lakeshore resorts offer darkness, silence, and a better chance of revontulet, the Northern Lights. We have sorted our recommendations by style and distance, with a planner’s note on which guest profiles each suits best. Use this as a starting point, then get in touch and we can advise based on your specific guest list and ceremony venue.
Arctic Light Hotel — boutique downtown
Housed in Rovaniemi’s former city hall — a handsome building from the post-war reconstruction era — Arctic Light Hotel occupies the centre of town and is the city’s most decorated boutique property. Its 57 rooms range from compact doubles to the spacious Polar Rooms: 36 m² suites with a private sauna, king-size bed, lounge area, rain shower, and Rituals toiletries. Rooms start from around €134 per night in shoulder season, rising steeply during aurora peak (December to March) and the Christmas period. Breakfast here is famous across Finnish Lapland — a long, calm buffet with smoked salmon, cloudberry preserves, and rye breads that sets couples up for a morning snowshoe or a pre-wedding styling session.
The hotel’s Arctic Winter Garden — a glass-enclosed heated terrace — can be booked for private events, making it a favourite for small rehearsal dinners or post-ceremony gatherings of up to 30 guests. Walk five minutes north and you reach the Ounasjoki riverbank, which is broad and beautiful under a full moon in January. We recommend Arctic Light to couples who want their family group to be able to wander independently into town, to pop into the market hall, or to find a late coffee without needing a taxi. Its rating among couples consistently runs above 9.5.
“We had our closest family there for four nights. The sauna suite meant we could debrief after the ceremony in complete privacy — slippers, reindeer fur, nobody knocking on the door.
Anna & Mikael, married January 2025
HAAWE Boutique Apart Hotel — design apartments
HAAWE occupies a functionalist 1933 building two streets from the pedestrian centre, and its 14 rooms are among the most thoughtfully designed in Rovaniemi. Each apartment tells a different story — rooms are named for Arctic phenomena such as mist, ice, river, and fire — and all come with a fully equipped kitchen, premium pillow menu, bathrobes, and a breakfast hamper delivered to the room the previous evening. Some apartments include a private sauna. With only 14 rooms, HAAWE feels more like a private residence than a hotel, and couples rate it at 9.8 for two-person stays — the highest couples’ score of any property in the city centre.
The room kitchen means guests can pick up provisions from the nearby kauppahalli (market hall) and cook a quiet Finnish-style supper of smoked vendace and new potatoes after a long wedding day. We suggest HAAWE for the couple themselves, or for a small party of four to six guests who value seclusion and design over resort-scale amenities. Book at least 8–10 months in advance for December and January stays; the hotel fills entirely during aurora season and the Christmas week.
- Rooms — 12 rooms and 2 suites, each uniquely themed.
- Kitchen — Fully equipped with dishwasher, espresso machine, and fridge stocked for breakfast.
- Sauna — Available in select apartments.
- Location — 5–8 minutes on foot from the railway station and city restaurants.
- Couples’ rating — 9.8 on major booking platforms.
Arctic TreeHouse Hotel — forest suites
Set on a wooded hillside beside the Arctic Circle, Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is one of the most recognised properties in Finnish Lapland. Its 64 nest-like suites are built among the pines, with floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows facing north to maximise aurora sightings. The GlassHouse suites — 55 m² each, with a bedroom, sitting room, two-person sauna, and deep bathtub — are the property’s most popular with wedding couples. Restaurant Rakas (the name means ‘beloved’ in Finnish) serves a menu of seasonal Nordic ingredients: Arctic char, cloudberries, juniper-smoked reindeer, wild mushrooms gathered from the surrounding forest. The hotel has received the ‘Most Romantic Atmosphere’ award from several travel publications and offers an Arctic Romance Package that includes a private sauna, champagne, and a guided Northern Lights excursion.
The hotel is located at Tarvantie 3, on the Arctic Circle road, roughly 8 km from the city centre — close enough for taxi transfer but far enough that the forest silence is complete by nightfall. We frequently pair Arctic TreeHouse with atmospheric candlelight ceremony décor for winter weddings, as the surrounding spruce trees lend themselves beautifully to lanterns and warm tungsten string lights. Guest groups of up to 30–35 can be accommodated across the hotel’s various room categories, making it well suited to smaller wedding parties who wish to stay together. Advance booking of 10–14 months is advisable for December through February.
Apukka Resort — aurora cabins on the lake
Apukka Resort sits approximately 12 km east of the city centre, beside a frozen lake in a birch and pine forest. Its Aurora Cabins are glass-roofed pods — low, dark, and entirely insulated against the Lapland cold — designed around a single purpose: lying in bed watching the Northern Lights arc overhead without leaving the warmth of a duvet. Variants include the Aurora Cabin Queen (couples), Aurora Cabin King (expanded living area, up to 4 guests), and Aurora Cabin Family (up to 6 guests). The Kammi Glass Igloo Suite is a larger, kammi-style structure that references the traditional earth dwellings of the Sámi. Every cabin includes a private bathroom, electric fireplace, mini-fridge, and coffee and tea facilities. An outdoor jacuzzi and lakeside sauna are available to all guests.
Apukka is about 10 minutes from Santa Claus Village by car, and 20 minutes from Rovaniemi airport. We often recommend it to wedding guests who are extending their trip into a wider Lapland adventure — husky sledding, ice fishing, and snowmobile safaris depart directly from the resort in winter. Direct booking through the resort’s own site offers a 5% discount on accommodation packages. For couples who are drawn to the wilder side of Lapland, Apukka delivers solitude and spectacle in equal measure. Reserve from early spring for the following winter season.
“Our guests who stayed at Apukka saw the aurora three nights running. They came to the reception still talking about it — we almost became secondary to the sky.
Lotta & James, married February 2024
Arctic SnowHotel — ice chapel and glass igloos
Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos occupies a forested site at Lehtoahontie 27, roughly 25 km south of the city, and is rebuilt from scratch each November as the temperatures fall. The property offers two entirely distinct experiences: the heated glass igloos, which provide 360-degree views of the winter sky, and the Arctic SnowHotel itself — hand-carved rooms of compacted snow, with sculpted walls, illuminated ice art, and temperatures maintained at around −5 °C inside (guests sleep in professional Arctic sleeping bags on reindeer-skin-covered beds). For wedding parties, the on-site Ice Chapel is a remarkable venue for blessings and symbolic ceremonies: the altar, benches, and walls are carved each season from fresh snow and ice, giving each winter’s chapel a unique character. The Ice Restaurant and Ice Bar offer dining in that same extraordinary environment.
Day-visit tickets (€35 per adult) allow guests who are staying elsewhere in Rovaniemi to visit the Ice Chapel and Snow Hotel for an afternoon — a popular option for couples whose wider guest group is based downtown. The on-site Kota Restaurant, a traditional Finnish kota with an open fire, provides a warmer alternative for evening meals. We recommend Arctic SnowHotel for those couples who want a truly unrepeatable night — one where the accommodation is itself part of the wedding narrative. Contact the sales team at sales@arcticsnowhotel.fi for wedding ceremony and private event enquiries. Lead time for Ice Chapel bookings is typically 12 months or more during peak season.
- Ice Chapel — Rebuilt annually; available for symbolic ceremonies and blessings.
- Glass Igloos — Heated, with 360° aurora views, rain showers, and Aurora Alarm.
- Snow Rooms — Maintained at −5 °C; sleeping bags and reindeer skins provided.
- Dining — Ice Restaurant, Ice Bar, and Kota Restaurant with open fire.
- Day visits — €35 per adult for guests staying elsewhere in Rovaniemi.
Santa's Igloos Arctic Circle — at the Arctic Circle itself
Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle is the largest glass-igloo property in Rovaniemi, with 71 igloos positioned at Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle line — 8 km from the city centre. The igloos come in four types: Premium, Premium with Sauna, Premium with Hot Tub, and Premium with Alcove. All include heated floors, air conditioning, tablet-controlled Aurora Alarm, room service, sound-insulated walls, rain shower, bathrobes, and breakfast. The on-site Arctic Eye restaurant faces north with floor-to-ceiling glass, serving Lapland and international cuisine. Because of its scale, Santa’s Igloos can accommodate larger wedding guest groups than almost any other specialist property in the region — useful when you have 20 or more guests who specifically want the glass-ceiling experience.
The hotel’s proximity to Santa Claus Village means guests have easy access to the snowmobile tracks, husky park, and reindeer farm that surround the village, as well as the various Arctic restaurants and bars along the Napapiiri road. For couples planning a winter wedding with many international guests, Santa’s Igloos provides a recognisable, high-quality base that requires minimal logistical explanation. The 600-metre walk to the village centre is manageable even in deep snow, and transfer services connect regularly to Rovaniemi airport, approximately 10 km away. We suggest booking by early spring for the following December through February period.
A planner's notes on logistics
Several practical realities shape hotel planning for a Rovaniemi wedding. First, lead times are long: the aurora season (November to March) and Christmas week (20 December to 6 January) are Rovaniemi’s two busiest periods, and most specialist properties sell out 10–14 months ahead. If your wedding falls in that window, opening your guest accommodation list at the same time you open your venue enquiries is essential. Second, transport must be considered: Rovaniemi has no underground or bus network of the kind guests from larger cities expect. Pre-arranged shared transfers from Rovaniemi airport (RVN), and between hotels and the ceremony venue, are a mark of a well-organised Lapland wedding. We coordinate these as part of our planning service. Third, the dark season is genuinely dark: at the winter solstice, Rovaniemi sees around two hours of pale light, and the walk from a forest hotel into town after dinner, across unlit snow, is an experience guests should be prepared for rather than surprised by. That same darkness is, of course, the reason revontulet appear so vividly in the sky.
We also advise couples to consider a mix of accommodation types: the couple themselves in a private cabin or sauna suite, close family in a boutique city hotel, and a larger group of guests in a resort property with its own activities programme. This arrangement keeps everyone within easy reach of the ceremony venue without placing the entire guest list in a single large hotel, which can feel impersonal. For help building a bespoke accommodation plan, see our Lapland wedding planning overview or write to us directly. We know every property on this list personally and can advise on which rooms to request, which seasons to avoid, and which properties offer private buyout options for groups of 30 or more.
