Swedish vs Finnish Lapland Weddings: Which Arctic Setting Suits You?

Two countries, one frozen wilderness, and two very different ideas of what an Arctic wedding can look like — here is how to choose.

One Wilderness, Two Countries

Draw a line on a map and you will find that Swedish Lapland and Finnish Lapland share almost everything: the same birch forests heavy with tykky snow, the same revontulet dancing above frozen lakes, the same kaamos darkness between November and January. Yet couples who have celebrated in both countries are unanimous — the experience of getting married here is shaped by far more than geography.

Swedish Lapland centres on Jukkasärvi and its famous ICEHOTEL, a purpose-built icon that draws couples seeking a single, internationally recognisable venue. Finnish Lapland, and Rovaniemi in particular, offers something more diffuse: a constellation of glass igloos, wilderness kotas, snow chapels and riverside forest clearings, each with its own character. Neither is better in any absolute sense. The question is which one matches how you imagine your day.

The ICEHOTEL: Sweden’s Iconic Setting

Since 1989 the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasärvi, roughly 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, has rebuilt itself from scratch each December using ice harvested from the nearby Torne River. Its Ceremony Hall — an intimate space seating up to 40 guests — is carved and sculpted by artists commissioned specifically for that winter. No two years are identical. The walls, altar details and benches are all cut from the same river ice; guests receive padded thermal suits and the temperature inside hovers around −25 °C throughout proceedings.

Standing at an altar carved from river ice, with sculptor-made walls glowing blue around us, felt genuinely otherworldly — nothing we had seen in photographs prepared us for the silence of that room.

The ICEHOTEL hosts approximately 80 ceremonies per winter season, which runs from December to April. This high volume means the scheduling is efficient but can feel less exclusive — it is common for multiple ceremonies to take place on the same day. Couples who want the venue to themselves may find the pace surprising. ICEHOTEL coordinators manage every detail, from documentation requirements (a Certificate of No Impediment is needed at least 14 weeks in advance under Swedish law) through to post-ceremony receptions in the warm Homestead building or the adjacent restaurant.

Rovaniemi: Finland’s Layered Offering

Rovaniemi sits exactly on the Arctic Circle and functions as the capital of Finnish Lapland. Unlike Jukkasärvi, it is not built around one defining venue. Instead, the town and its surrounding wilderness contain a breadth of settings that allow couples to assemble a day that feels genuinely personal. An ice chapel at Arctic SnowHotel, a glass-roofed igloo reception at Apukka Resort, a twilight ceremony inside a kota on a frozen riverbank, or a forest clearing ceremony with reindeer arriving by sleigh: each is possible within an hour of the city centre.

Finnish Lapland is also widely regarded as offering more reliable deep-winter conditions. Temperatures inland regularly reach −20 °C to −30 °C between December and February, with low wind and extraordinarily dry air. This means the snow sits heavy and undisturbed on branches — the signature Finnish tykky look that fills most winter wedding portfolios. The aurora probability is similar to Sweden’s: statistically, a clear night anywhere above 65°N gives roughly a 30–50% chance of visible revontulet from late September through March. For those who want candlelit indoor receptions as a complement to outdoor ceremonies, Rovaniemi’s selection of log restaurants and ice dining rooms is broad.

Aesthetic Contrast: Sculpted Ice vs Forest Wilderness

The aesthetic gap between the two destinations is the most important practical consideration for photography and styling. ICEHOTEL ceremonies are almost monochromatic: white snow, pale blue ice, black formal wear, and the occasional flicker of candlelight. The palette is limited by design — the material is the decoration. This produces images of extraordinary graphic clarity and a timeless, almost minimalist quality. If that restraint appeals, Sweden is the natural choice.

The Finnish forest palette

Finnish Lapland offers a fuller palette. Snow-laden pines framing a ceremony arch, golden kota firelight against deep dusk, the soft greens and purples of the aurora reflected in lake ice — there is far more colour and texture available to a photographer. Couples who work with our Lapland styling team often find that the Finnish landscape can absorb bolder floral choices, dramatic ceremony arches, or elaborate tablescapes in ways that an all-ice interior simply cannot.

  • ICEHOTEL Sweden — Monochromatic, sculptural, graphic. Ice walls as the sole decorative element. Very limited scope to add floral or fabric styling.
  • Finnish kota / snow chapel — Warm amber firelight, dark timber, candle glow. Intimate and textural. Accepts fabric draping and winter foliage beautifully.
  • Finnish glass igloo — Transparent overhead, aurora backdrop, soft interior lighting. Highly photographic at night. More architectural than rustic.
  • Finnish forest clearing — Full natural palette of birch and pine. Most flexible setting for arches, florals, and seasonal ruska colour in autumn.

Getting There: Travel and Logistics

Swedish Lapland’s main gateway is Kiruna Airport, approximately 15 km from Jukkasärvi. Direct flights from Stockholm (Arlanda) take under two hours; London connections require a change. Finnish Lapland is served by Rovaniemi Airport, which has direct charter and scheduled flights from several UK airports during peak winter season, with direct services often available from November through March. For guests travelling from mainland Europe or the UK, Rovaniemi is marginally easier to reach without a layover. That said, the ICEHOTEL’s logistical team is exceptionally practised at coordinating large international wedding parties, often sourcing accommodation across Jukkasärvi’s warm chalets for overflow guests.

Legal Paperwork: Finland vs Sweden

Both countries require a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) from your home country — for UK couples this means visiting a local register office and allowing 28 days from appointment to receipt of the certificate. Finland additionally requires an apostille on that document, adding a further processing step. Sweden requires documentation at least 14 weeks before the wedding date. Finland’s magistrate timelines are typically 8–12 weeks. Both timelines mean the paperwork process should begin a minimum of six months before travel, or sooner if your date falls in peak January–February season. A marriage performed in either country is fully recognised in the UK, EU and most other jurisdictions.

We underestimated the Finnish apostille requirement by three weeks and had to reschedule our magistrate appointment. Starting the paperwork process eight months out would have saved real stress.

Your Guests’ Experience

For smaller, very intimate ceremonies of 10–20 people, both destinations work equally well. For larger wedding parties, Rovaniemi’s greater variety of accommodation and venue spaces makes co-ordination more flexible — guests can be distributed across glass igloos, log cabins and hotel rooms with varying budgets, all within reach of each other. Jukkasärvi’s accommodation is more concentrated around the ICEHOTEL campus, which works as an advantage for cohesion but limits options at peak dates.

The activities available to wedding parties before or after the ceremony are broadly similar in both countries: snowmobile safaris, reindeer sleigh rides, husky sled tours, ice fishing, and aurora photography nights are well-established in Rovaniemi and Jukkasärvi alike. Finnish Lapland also offers the kammi — a traditional earth-banked turf shelter used for Lapland gatherings — as a distinct cultural experience less commonly available in Swedish Lapland itineraries. Contact us to discuss how we build multi-day itineraries around the wedding day itself.

  • Snowmobile safaris — Available in both countries; typical guided circuits run 2–4 hours with evening northern lights versions.
  • Husky sledding — Half-day and full-day options from most Rovaniemi and Jukkasärvi operators. Book 6+ months ahead in peak season.
  • Reindeer sleigh — More deeply embedded in Finnish Lapland’s wedding culture; reindeer arrival for guests is a popular ceremony touch in Rovaniemi.
  • Sauna and ice swimming — A Finnish institution. Riverside sauna followed by an ice swim is an exceptional group experience for wedding parties in Rovaniemi.

So Which Should You Choose?

Choose ICEHOTEL in Sweden if you want the definitive single-venue Arctic wedding, a sculptural ice chapel with genuine artistic provenance, and a logistical team that has managed hundreds of ceremonies. The visual signature is unmistakable and immediately recognisable worldwide. The trade-off is less styling flexibility, a more commercial atmosphere on busy days, and a longer required lead time for documentation.

Choose Finnish Lapland — and Rovaniemi specifically — if you want flexibility to build a day around multiple settings, stronger photography variety, more accommodation options for your guests, and the wider cultural texture of Finnish winter life: the kota, the sauna, the reindeer, the forest. Rovaniemi also benefits from the widest range of specialist wedding styling services in Finnish Lapland, with floral, lighting and décor expertise tailored to Arctic conditions. Our team works exclusively here, which means we know every venue, every season, and every detail that makes the difference in these temperatures.

Some couples choose both — a legal ceremony at Rovaniemi’s magistrate followed by a celebratory blessing in the Swedish ice church the following winter. There is no rule that says you must do everything at once, and the Arctic rewards those who return.

Frequently asked

Still wondering?

01Is a wedding at ICEHOTEL legally binding for UK couples?+
Yes. A civil ceremony conducted at ICEHOTEL under Swedish law is fully recognised in the UK and most other countries. You will need to provide a Certificate of No Impediment from your local UK register office at least 14 weeks before the date, along with copies of passports and birth certificates.
02Is it colder at ICEHOTEL in Sweden or in Rovaniemi, Finland?+
Both are similar in mid-winter. Rovaniemi temperatures typically range from −10 °C to −30 °C in January and February; Jukkasärvi is comparable. The ICEHOTEL ceremony hall itself is kept at around −5 °C. Dry, still air makes both feel manageable when properly dressed.
03Can we see the northern lights from both destinations?+
Yes. Both lie above the Arctic Circle. Aurora probability on a clear night is broadly 30–50% between late September and mid-March. Neither destination offers a guaranteed sighting, but both offer dark skies with minimal light pollution. The aurora season in Rovaniemi runs from September through March.
04Which destination is better for larger wedding parties?+
Rovaniemi generally offers more accommodation variety and flexibility for parties of more than 20–25 guests. ICEHOTEL’s campus is self-contained, which works well for cohesion but can limit choice at peak dates. Rovaniemi’s range of hotels, chalets and resort igloos allows more budget variety across a large group.
05How far in advance should we book a Lapland wedding?+
For peak dates in January and February, booking 12–18 months in advance is strongly advisable for both destinations. ICEHOTEL ceremonies are popular and dates sell quickly. In Finnish Lapland, the most sought-after venues and glass igloos also fill 12+ months out. Legal paperwork for either country should begin at least six months before travel.
06Do you plan weddings in Swedish Lapland as well as Finnish Lapland?+
Our team is based in Rovaniemi and specialises exclusively in Finnish Lapland weddings. We know the local venues, suppliers and conditions intimately. If you are drawn to Sweden, we are happy to discuss the key differences and help you understand what Finnish Lapland offers in comparison before you decide.
