Four structures built entirely from snow and ice, each rebuilt from nothing every winter — here is how they compare as wedding venues.
Why a snow hotel wedding
Marrying inside a structure made entirely from snow and ice is, on paper, an unlikely idea. The chapel hovers around −2 to −5°C; guests wear expedition-grade parkas over their finery; the officiant’s breath is visible. And yet couples who have stood at those ice altars describe something that warm-weather ceremonies rarely achieve: an atmosphere so otherworldly that time seems to slow. The Finnish word kaamos — the blue half-light of the polar winter — settles over everything, and even a ceremony of twenty minutes feels immense.
Finnish Lapland has four distinct snow-hotel venues capable of hosting weddings: Arctic SnowHotel outside Rovaniemi, Lapland Hotels SnowVillage in Lainio near Ylläs, the SnowCastle of Kemi on the Bothnian coast, and Snowman World at Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle. Each is rebuilt annually from tens of millions of kilograms of snow, and each melts away each spring — which means the venue you marry in will never exist again. If you are considering any of them, this guide covers what matters most: season, chapel capacity, tone, and how each fits different couples.
Arctic SnowHotel, Rovaniemi
Located in Lehtojärvi, roughly 25 kilometres from Rovaniemi’s city centre, Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos is the venue most closely associated with Lapland weddings in the English-speaking world. The snow and ice hotel opens each year around 15 December and remains available until 31 March. In temperature terms, that window runs from the depths of kaamos — when Rovaniemi receives barely two hours of grey light — through the bright, snow-laden days of late March when the sun arcs well above the horizon.
The Ice Chapel seats approximately 30–50 guests on ice pews, with standing room at the back for a modest additional number. Ceremony temperature inside the chapel is around 0 to −5°C. Couples may choose a legally binding ceremony with a marriage registrar from the local registry office, a Lutheran pastor, or a more theatrical arrangement with the resident Ice Princess or, naturally, Santa Claus. The package includes assistance with Finnish legal paperwork — a practical detail that deters many couples from researching ice-hotel weddings but which the venue has refined over many seasons.
“The candles along the aisle were frozen into the ice walls. Everything glowed blue and gold at once. We had not expected to cry, but we both did.

After the ceremony, the celebration moves to the Ice Restaurant, the log-framed Kota Restaurant around an open fire, or the full-service Log Restaurant. Toasts are served in glasses carved from pure ice. Overnight accommodation options include glass igloos with panoramic views of the northern sky — the probability of revontulet sightings on a clear winter night is meaningful when solar activity is moderate — and snow-and-ice suites within the hotel itself. Contact the venue for a tailored quotation; pricing is not published.
Best suited to
- Small ceremonies — the chapel capacity works best for intimate gatherings of up to around 50 seated guests.
- Couples planning a multi-day stay — glass igloo accommodation and a full activity programme make this a natural wedding trip base.
- Legally binding ceremonies — the venue has the deepest experience handling Finnish marriage registration for international couples.
Lapland Hotels SnowVillage, Lainio
Thirty kilometres from the ski resort of Ylläs, in the community of Lainio in Kittilä municipality, Lapland Hotels SnowVillage rises each winter from more than 20 million kilograms of snow and some 300,000 kilograms of crystal-clear natural ice. The 2025–2026 season — the village’s 25th year — runs from 25 December 2025 to 6 April 2026 under the theme Pure Celebration. The village covers approximately 4,000 square metres and comprises decorated snow suites, an Ice Restaurant, an Ice Bar, and an Ice Chapel.
Weddings at SnowVillage are intimate affairs; the venue holds only a handful of ceremonies each season. The chapel is furnished in ice: pews, altar, and decorative details carved fresh each winter to a different artistic theme. One tradition that stands out is the bride’s arrival by poroajelut — reindeer sled — which makes for remarkable photographs and sets a tone no conventional entrance can replicate. The nearest town of size, Kittilä, has an airport with direct winter charter and scheduled flights from Helsinki.
Because SnowVillage is a ticketed visitor attraction open to the general public during the day, private hire of the chapel for an evening ceremony is the standard approach. The surrounding Ylläs fell landscape — one of Finland’s largest ski resorts — provides a compelling backdrop for outdoor photography during the blue-hour light of the Lapland afternoon. For styling advice tailored to snow-hotel ceremonies, our planning team can advise on layering formal wear with warmth.
Best suited to
- Couples combining a ski trip with a wedding — Ylläs slopes are a short transfer away.
- Those seeking strong visual storytelling — the reindeer arrival and artisan ice installations photograph exceptionally well.
- Guests arriving from Helsinki — Kittilä Airport reduces travel time significantly compared with more remote venues.
SnowCastle of Kemi
The SnowCastle of Kemi is a different proposition from the other three venues. Built annually on the frozen surface of the Bothnian Sea, it is the largest snow-and-ice hotel in the world by floor area — between 13,000 and 20,000 square metres depending on the season — and it draws couples from as far as Japan and Hong Kong specifically for its ecumenical SnowChapel. Seated capacity in the chapel runs to 50–100 guests, making it the most spacious of the four venues and the only one realistically suited to ceremonies with a larger guest list.
The seasonal window runs from late January to April, slightly shorter than the Rovaniemi venues because construction requires a fully frozen sea surface. The SnowRestaurant seats up to 200 for a sit-down reception. For couples who want to continue experiencing ice interiors in warmer months, the adjacent SnowExperience365 hall stays open year-round with ice sculptures, an ice bar, and an ice slide inside a permanently refrigerated space.
“We had seventy guests, which ruled out every other ice chapel in Lapland. Kemi was the only venue that could hold us all seated, and the SnowChapel was extraordinary.

Kemi sits at the southern edge of Finnish Lapland, roughly 110 kilometres south of Rovaniemi, and has its own railway station with direct services from Helsinki. The coastal setting means slightly milder outdoor temperatures than inland venues: expect around −10 to −15°C on a typical February afternoon, compared with −15 to −25°C at inland locations. Aurora visibility is somewhat reduced by lighter coastal skies, though the sea ice landscape offers its own photographic character.
Best suited to
- Larger wedding parties — the chapel seats 50–100 and the restaurant 200, making it the only snow venue for full-scale receptions.
- Guests travelling by train — direct Helsinki–Kemi rail service makes it accessible without a domestic flight.
- Couples visiting in late January or February — peak season when the full SnowCastle complex is complete.
Snowman World, Arctic Circle
Snowman World at Santa Claus Village sits directly on the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, operated as part of the broader Snowhotel Family alongside Arctic SnowHotel. The venue is primarily a snow amusement park — slides, labyrinthine snow sculptures, an ice-skating rink — with a Snow Restaurant and an Ice Bar. As a dedicated wedding venue it occupies a different niche: the Ice Chapel at its sister property, Arctic SnowHotel, is more commonly used for ceremonies, while Snowman World’s Snow Restaurant is available for private hire as a reception space.
The Santa Claus Village location — fifteen minutes from Rovaniemi’s city centre and directly on the Arctic Circle — makes it the most accessible of the four venues. For couples who want the atmosphere of a snow-built interior without travelling far from Rovaniemi’s hotels and services, or for families with children who will appreciate the surrounding activities, Snowman World’s dining spaces are worth enquiring about. For planning enquiries, our team can advise on which combination of Arctic Circle venue and dining space best fits your guest profile.
Comparing the four venues
Choosing between the four venues comes down to four practical questions: how many guests you are inviting, whether you need a legally binding ceremony or prefer to celebrate in Lapland and marry at home, how much emphasis you place on seclusion versus accessibility, and which season window suits your travel dates.
- Arctic SnowHotel — up to ~50 seated, open 15 Dec–31 Mar, strongest legal ceremony infrastructure, glass igloo accommodation on site.
- SnowVillage Lainio — intimate, open 25 Dec–6 Apr, reindeer arrival tradition, fell landscape photography, adjacent to Ylläs skiing.
- SnowCastle Kemi — up to 100 in chapel, restaurant seats 200, open late Jan–Apr, largest venue, best for bigger parties, accessible by rail.
- Snowman World — Arctic Circle location, most accessible from Rovaniemi city, best as dining complement rather than standalone chapel venue.
All four venues require warm clothing. Plan for −10 to −20°C outdoors depending on location and month, and for 0 to −5°C inside the ice spaces. Quality thermal underlayers, insulated boots, and rented outerwear — most venues can arrange this — allow couples to wear formal attire without discomfort. Ceremony durations at ice chapels are typically 15–25 minutes. For ideas on candle and lighting arrangements that enhance the blue-toned ice interior, or cold-weather florals suited to sub-zero ceremonies, our team works with all four venues.
Planning your snow hotel wedding
Snow hotel weddings require earlier planning than their summer counterparts. The most popular dates — Saturday evenings in February, when clear skies are most frequent and snow conditions are at their best — book twelve to eighteen months in advance at Arctic SnowHotel and SnowVillage Lainio. SnowCastle Kemi, with its larger capacity, has somewhat more availability, but its shorter season and unique character mean popular dates still fill early.
Legal requirements for international couples marrying in Finland include a certificate of no impediment from your home country, typically translated into Finnish, submitted several weeks before the ceremony. Arctic SnowHotel has the most experience navigating this for non-Finnish couples. Many couples choose instead to complete their legal marriage at home and hold a blessing or symbolic ceremony in the snow chapel — equally moving, and without the paperwork lead-time.
Photography deserves particular thought. Ice chapels are demanding environments: extreme cold reduces battery life (carry spares inside a jacket pocket), and the mixed light — candles, coloured LED installations, the ambient blue of ice — rewards a photographer experienced in these conditions. Our portfolio includes work from all four venues. For a planning conversation, reach out at any stage.
“Nobody told us the photographs would look like paintings. The ice turned every candle into a pool of amber light, and outside the blue was extraordinary.
